Gin&G, a design studio passionate about placing sustainability at the forefront of its design ethos, and Synergraphic Design, a leader in innovative art glass solutions, have come together to reimagine waste materials as high-quality design elements. This collaboration breathes new life into glass offcuts with CHANCE, a series of light sculptures crafted from sheet glass remnants. Designed by Gin&G and meticulously brought to life in collaboration with Synergraphic Design, CHANCE exemplifies artistry and sustainable design in harmony.

Originally commissioned for FURA, a plant-forward restaurant and bar envisioned as a sustainable culinary space, CHANCE embodies an innovative approach to reimagining offcuts as integral design elements.
Inspired by FURA’s ethos of partnering with local food vendors to advance sustainability, Gin&G sought to extend this vision to spatial interiors and their curated objects. The studio initiated collaborations with industry partners known for supplying diverse building materials, inviting them to take part in reimagining waste as a constructive material. Working with Synergraphic, Gin&G sourced off-cut glass pieces, which were then repurposed, cut into organic geometric shapes, and layered together – turning them into beautiful light sculptures.

CHANCE: EMBRACING THE BEAUTY OF THE UNPREDICTABLE

The name CHANCE reflects the unpredictability in how each sculpture takes shape, as the available off-cut glass materials vary at the time of fabrication. The final arrangement of the glass layers results in a distinct composition, conceived by happenstance, with each piece becoming a one-of-a-kind artwork, shaped by entirely by ‘chance’. Through CHANCE, Gin&G and Synergraphic celebrate the innate potential of glass offcuts, reimagining them as objects of beauty and profound meaning.

“Beyond the conceptualization of meaningful spatial interiors that transcend fleeting trends, the studio positions itself as both a testbed and research laboratory for innovative ideas, embracing sustainability through thoughtful explorations with alternative materials and the reimagining of waste. Through the prototyping of object designs and fostering cross-disciplinary collaborations, we aim to facilitate a substantive dialogue within the industry on sustainability and the transformative potential of material reuse.” said Georgina, partner and co-founder of GIN&G.

"In the flat glass supply trade for the building industry, up to 25% of glass is often wasted when sheets are cut for various applications," said Sara Ang, Director of Synergraphic. "At Synergraphic, we’re committed to reducing this waste by repurposing glass offcuts into valuable products. Our program encourages our team and collaborating artists to transform discarded glass into pieces that are both beautiful and purposeful through diverse glass techniques," she added.

Together, Gin&G and Synergraphic Design are redefining perceptions of off-cuts, demonstrating its potential as a sustainable medium for beautiful, meaningful art.

Beyond its debut at FURA, CHANCE has been showcased at the EMERGE@FIND Design Fair curated by Design Anthology in 2023 and the Design Singapore Showcase at BOUTIQUES The Gifting Edition 2024.
